Visual Power
There are two ways of communicating messages so they are powerful and compelling: using strong visual images and using strong visual words. Most people understand the power of a powerful graphic image; Showing the consequences of a car accident caused by a drunk driver is more compelling than simply the words: "Don't drink and drive".
However, it’s equally important to use "power" words that conjure up strong visuals. In a classic experiment, Dr. Loftus had two "juries" hear the same case. In the fact pattern, a rock was thrown at a car window. In one case, it "cracked" the window causing the driver to swerve; in the other case, the rock "smashed" the window. The difference: the latter driver was awarded an average of an additional $10,000! So, if your goal is to compel action, choose "power" words.
Influence Other Decision-Makers.
A key component to a persuasive presentation is being very clear about the goal. Many times, you’re speaking with a member of the decision-making team, but not necessarily the final decision-maker, especially when a team or committee must decide. The person(s) you’re addressing need to conclude that, all things considered, working with you and your firm is the best option available. However, the goal of the presentation isn’t just to communicate that message, but also to empower the person to communicate that fact, passionately, to the rest of the decision-making team! This means that the presentation, in terms of content and format, has to be one that not only you can easily present so it is compelling, but also one that your audience can re-present easily to the rest of the team comfortably and with some of your passion. It’s a more complex goal - but one which produces winning results!
