As some of you know, in addition to supervising
the Presentation Excellence group of companies, I teach Business Strategy and
Leadership Skills for CUNY’S Baruch Management Department. A recent discussion
with the classes on presentation effectiveness raised an issue that we often
take for granted: that the corporate culture commitment to excellence often
determines presenters’ success.
Presentation Excellence was started when a
multi-billion dollar company asked how it could improve a presentation that
already was closing 92% of the deals – because “just 1% increase would means
millions more dollars”. Imagine working for a company that encourages
you in every way to be the best, so you can win more often!.
One way is to encourage the six winning disciplines:
- Focus the presentation’s message so it strongly
resonates with the specific audience
- Organize the presentation to guide the
audience’s decision-making process, and if they aren’t the decision-makers,
enable them to persuasively re-tell the story to those who are
- Design the presentation so it flows naturally
for the presenter, rather than have to fit the information into a template set
by other people who never presented this message
- Give the presenter time to rehearse the
presentation so he/she feels comfortable and can deliver it with the same
enthusiasm as any other conversational topic about which he/she is passionate.
If a team is presenting, it’s even more important that the team rehearses
together so they come across as a “close knit team” rather than individuals
thrown together for the presentation
- Give the presenter a full understanding of who
the audience is, so he/she can tailor the information and the examples which
make it easy to absorb new information
- Let the presenter view the setting in which the
presentation will take place in order to leverage its props to increase the
presenter's effectiveness.
The result is that when your team executes on
your sales strategy, it will feel that it truly is the leader in your company or industry! Try to get your company or
division to adopt this winning presentation culture! Call us if you need
training or organization development assistance!
